Favorite Bars in the Coal Region
There has never been a shortage of drinking establishments in the Coal Region. The response to this poll was so large and varied, I had a hard time determining a winner. The truth is they are all winners, even if they no longer exist. Each provides us with good times and great memories of our Coal Region heritage.
Here's the Top Ten....
- Club 18 - Pottsville
The winner! A popular place for many years. At Club 18, no one is allowed to order a mixed drink in which the ingredients are not included in the name of the drink (e.g. rum'n coke = yes, sea breeze = no). Standing room only for Penn State vs. Notre Dame games.
- Benny's - Girardville
A gathering place for generations until it closed in the late 1970's. Lots of people submitted fond memories of Benny and Josephine. The building now houses "Malloy's Ale House", another fine tavern.
- RJ's - Shenandoah
Good friends, good food, good beer. And it's in Chendo (so the locals can crawl home). What more d'yiz want, da frick??
- The Coal Hole - Shamokin
The Coal Hole fries are outta dis world!
- Gonda's Elbow Room - Wilkes-Barre
Home of the Gonda Guzzler and the Gonda Cherry Bomb. And squirt bottle shots.
- The Corner Lounge - Kulpmont
Too many memories to pick just one!
- Pirate's Club - Mahanoy City
Good place to hear live music. Now a retirement home.
- Black Diamond - Frackville
"Boris's where I met my lovely wife, Black Diamond where I lost her!" Great hot wings.
- Took One's - Tamaqua
Popcorn, peanuts, pickled eggs, and sausage. And people standing on bar stools, singing. Closed in the late 1980's.
- Sand Castle Cafe - St. Clair
A 12 oz. draft for 50 cents during Happy Hour.
